ENGLISH ORIENTALISM AND SUFISM

ENGLISH ORIENTALISM AND SUFISM

Islamic mysticism is high on the list of subjects of interest in the Western world. For this reason, hundreds of works are written about Sufism and many theories on its emergence are propounded by Westerners, especially the British. It can be said that most of these orientalist works produce subjective and political information rather than illuminating the truth of Sufism. Such that, if a Sufi read what English orientalists wrote, particularly in certain periods, it is possible that they would not be able to relate what they were reading to themselves.

In English Orientalism and Sufism, Süleyman Derin looks at works on Sufism by English orientalists, focussing in depth on orientalist theories on the birth and development of Sufism.
